0-2" Crushed Limestone (Granular B) – Structural Sub-Base
0–2" Crushed Limestone (Granular B) for Sub-Base, Deep Fill & Driveway Foundations
0–2" Crushed Limestone, commonly referred to as Granular B (often Granular B Type II), is a coarse, compactable aggregate used as the structural sub-base under driveways, roads, and hardscaping. This mix includes everything from fines (dust) up to 2" stone, allowing it to lock together tightly while also providing the strength needed for deeper construction layers.
In Southwestern Ontario, a proper sub-base matters. Heavy clay soils and freeze-thaw cycles can cause shifting and heaving, especially when a driveway or patio base is built too thin. A thicker layer of 0–2" helps spread loads, stabilize soft subgrade, and reduce movement that can lead to rutting, cracking, or settling.
Best Use Cases
- New driveway construction: Often used as the bottom 6–12 inches of a full driveway build before adding a smoother top layer.
- Deep fill and grade building: Cost-effective for filling deeper excavations, raising low areas, and building up rough grade.
- Soft ground stabilization: Helps bridge wet or spongy subgrade better than smaller stones, making it useful where clay holds moisture.
- Road base and heavy-use areas: Suitable for base layers under areas that see heavier loads or frequent traffic.
Installation Note
Because of the larger stone size, 0–2" does not finish smooth and is designed to be buried. For a drivable surface, cap this material with a smoother, compactable top layer such as 0–3/4" limestone (Granular A). Installing in lifts and compacting thoroughly will improve long-term performance.
0-7/8" Crushed Limestone – Heavy Duty Base
0–7/8" Crushed Limestone for Heavy Duty Bases and High-Load Driveways
For projects demanding superior structural support, our 0–7/8" Crushed Limestone steps up where standard gravel leaves off. Featuring a slightly coarser gradation than standard 0–3/4" (Granular A), this mix includes crushed angular rock up to 7/8", blended with the fines needed for tight compaction.
The Heavy-Duty Advantage
The increased stone size in this matrix provides higher shear strength, meaning it is more resistant to being pushed around by heavy tires. This makes it a strong choice for agricultural laneways, commercial parking areas, and long rural driveways that see frequent delivery truck traffic. It also helps bridge softer subsoils, creating a “raft” that distributes point loads and reduces the chance of tires sinking into clay.
Ideal Use Cases
- Farm laneways: Supports tractors and heavy machinery with less displacement over time.
- Commercial parking and access lanes: Durable base material for higher-traffic zones.
- Soft ground stabilization: The larger aggregate bites into softer ground better than finer mixes, helping firm up wet or spongy areas.
Why Choose 0–7/8" Instead of 0–3/4"?
If you are parking standard passenger cars, 0–3/4" typically provides a smoother finish. If you are parking RVs, boats, or operating heavy equipment, 0–7/8" offers the extra ruggedness that helps reduce rutting and shifting over time.
1" Pink Clear Stone – Decorative Crushed Granite
1" Pink Clear Stone – Crushed Granite for Gardens, Borders & Decorative Beds
Pink clear stone is a crushed granite aggregate sized to approximately 1 inch, prized for its natural salmon-pink colour with flecks of grey and white throughout. The pink tone comes from potassium feldspar in the granite itself — it is not dyed or coated, which means the colour will not fade over time. When wet, the stone deepens to a richer rose with a natural sparkle from exposed quartz crystals.
Because it is crushed rather than tumbled, the angular edges interlock when placed, creating a more stable surface than rounded river rock. At the same time, the uniform 1-inch sizing with no fines means water drains freely through the gaps — making this a clear stone that is both decorative and functional.
A Standout Option for Windsor-Essex Landscapes
Pink clear stone is one of the less common decorative aggregates in the Windsor-Essex area, which makes it an effective way to set a property apart. The warm pink tones contrast well against dark mulch borders, green foliage, and the neutral tones of concrete or limestone common in Southwestern Ontario homes. It also handles our freeze-thaw cycles without breaking down, unlike softer decorative options.
Key Applications
- Garden Beds & Borders: Creates a clean, colourful ground cover that suppresses weeds when installed over landscape fabric at 3 inches deep.
- Decorative Accents: Use around tree rings, along walkways, or as a contrast border against darker stone for visual interest.
- Pathways: The angular edges lock together underfoot, providing a more stable walking surface than rounded pea stone. Install 3 inches deep with proper edging.
- Drainage Features: Functions as a clear stone — works in decorative French drain channels or areas where you need both drainage and appearance.
Important Note
Install at a minimum of 3 inches deep for proper coverage — at 1 inch in size, a thinner layer will show gaps to the fabric or soil below. Use landscape fabric underneath for weed suppression, and install edging to prevent stone from migrating into lawn areas. Fresh stone may have quarry dust that mutes the colour initially; the first rain will wash it off and reveal the full pink tone.
1"-3" Round River Stone – Decorative Glacial Landscape Rock
Glacial Round Stone (River Rock) for Decorative Landscaping
Our glacial round stone (often referred to as river rock) is a naturally rounded decorative landscape stone sourced from glacial deposits. It features smooth edges and a consistent blend of earth tones including greys, tans, beiges, and muted reds. Sold in bulk, this stone is commonly used for decorative ground cover and drainage applications where appearance matters.
Because of its smooth, rounded shape, round stone does not compact or lock together like crushed stone. It is best suited for garden beds, around foundations, and other areas where drainage and aesthetics are more important than structural strength. It is not recommended for driveways or high-traffic walkways.
Choose Your Size
- 3/8" Glacial Round Stone: A smaller decorative option that works well in garden beds, around shrubs, and in areas where a finer texture is preferred. Provides effective drainage while maintaining a lighter visual appearance.
- 3/4" Glacial Round Stone: The most common size for river rock ground cover. Heavy enough to stay in place during rainfall, yet easy to spread and maintain. Frequently used for foundation splash strips to help reduce soil splash and keep siding cleaner.
Common uses in Windsor-Essex include garden beds, decorative ground cover, drainage areas, and foundation splash strips. Due to its rounded shape, this material is not suitable for driveways.
1-2" Black Granite – Bold Decorative Landscape Stone
1-2" Black Granite – Large Angular Stone for Beds, Borders & Dry Creek Beds
1-2" black granite is the larger counterpart to our 3/4" clear stone — same crushed gabbro (trap rock) material, same deep charcoal-to-black colour, but with more visual presence. At this size, each stone is individually visible with sharp angular facets that catch light and create depth and texture across a landscape bed. The dark colour is natural and mineral-based, so it will not fade with sun exposure.
The larger size changes how the stone is used. Where 3/4" creates a tight, uniform carpet, 1-2" produces a bolder, more dimensional look with visible shadows between stones. This makes it the better choice for large landscape beds, wide borders, dry creek beds, and areas where you want the stone itself to be a design feature rather than just a ground cover.
Designed for Impact in Larger Spaces
In the Windsor-Essex area, 1-2" black granite is commonly used for front-yard landscape beds, commercial property borders, and modern low-maintenance designs where homeowners are replacing annual mulch with a permanent stone ground cover. The dark tones pair well with the light-coloured brick and concrete common in Essex County subdivisions, and the granite handles our freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or breaking down.
Key Applications
- Landscape Beds & Borders: Install 3-4 inches deep over landscape fabric for full coverage. The larger stones require a deeper layer than 3/4" stone to prevent gaps showing through to the fabric.
- Dry Creek Beds: One of the best uses at this size. The angular 1-2" pieces create a natural-looking drainage channel. Lay 3-5 inches deep and mix with a few larger accent boulders for realism.
- Around Water Features: Dark stone around ponds and fountains makes water look richer and more reflective. Granite is scratch-proof and wear-resistant in wet environments.
- Erosion Control on Slopes: Heavier individual stones resist displacement from water runoff better than smaller aggregate. The angular edges interlock and hold position on grades.
Important Note
Because the stones are larger, gaps between them are wider — you need a minimum of 3 inches deep (effectively two layers of stone) for proper weed suppression and coverage. Edging is essential to keep stone contained, especially along lawn borders. Like all black granite, the stone appears darkest when wet and lighter charcoal when dry. A rinse after installation removes quarry dust and reveals the full colour.
1/4" Pea Stone (P-Stone) – Smooth, Comfortable Ground Cover
Comfortable, Versatile, and Pet-Friendly Ground Cover
Pea stone, also known as P-stone, gets its name from its size, roughly that of a green pea. This naturally rounded glacial stone has smooth edges and contains no sharp fragments, making it one of the most comfortable aggregates available for foot traffic and pet use.
Because of its small size and rounded shape, pea stone provides excellent drainage while remaining soft underfoot. It is commonly used in areas where comfort, cleanliness, and appearance are more important than compaction or load-bearing strength.
Common Uses
- Dog Runs: Easy on paws, drains quickly, and simple to rake or scoop for routine cleaning.
- Play Areas: A clean, stone-based alternative to wood chips for backyard play spaces.
- Decorative Borders: A fine-textured accent around garden beds, flagstone, and walkways.
Caution: Due to its smooth, rounded shape, pea stone does not lock together. It is not recommended for driveways or walkways with wheeled traffic such as strollers or wheelchairs, as wheels may sink or shift the stone.
Commonly used throughout Kingsville, Leamington and the Windsor-Essex area for dog runs, play areas, and decorative landscaping.
3/4" Black Granite – Drainage & Decorative Clear Stone
3/4" Black Granite Clear Stone for Drainage, Beds & Modern Landscaping
3/4" black granite is a crushed angular stone with a deep charcoal-to-jet-black colour, produced from natural gabbro (commonly called trap rock in the aggregate industry). The dark colour comes from the mineral composition of the rock itself — pyroxene and plagioclase feldspar — not from dye or surface treatment. This means it will not fade with UV exposure or wash out over time.
As a clear stone, it is screened to a uniform 3/4-inch size with no fines or dust. Water flows freely through the gaps between stones, making it one of the few aggregates that works equally well as a high-end decorative ground cover and a functional drainage material. The angular crushed edges interlock when placed, creating a surface that stays put better than rounded alternatives.
Why 3/4" Is the Versatile Size
At 3/4 inch, this stone hits a practical sweet spot. It is large enough to drain effectively around weeping tile and foundation walls — meeting Ontario Building Code requirements for drainage aggregate — while being small enough to walk on comfortably and create a uniform, refined look in decorative beds. This dual-purpose nature makes it popular across Essex County for homeowners who want one material that handles both drainage projects and landscape aesthetics.
Key Applications
- French Drains & Weeping Tile: The standard size for surrounding perforated drain pipe. Keeps drainage pathways open without clogging — and unlike limestone, granite will not dissolve in acidic soil or produce calcium deposits over time.
- Decorative Garden Beds: The dark colour creates a bold, modern contrast against green plantings, light-coloured siding, and concrete. Install 2-3 inches deep over landscape fabric.
- Pathways & Walkways: Comfortable underfoot with enough angularity to stay in place. Spread 3 inches deep over a compacted base.
- Window Wells & Foundation Drainage: Clean, dark appearance at the surface while performing the drainage function underneath.
Important Note
Fresh black granite may appear charcoal-grey due to quarry dust on the surface. After the first rain, the dust washes off and the true dark colour emerges. For decorative installations, hose it down after spreading to see the final appearance immediately. The stone will always look darkest when wet — some homeowners apply a stone sealer to maintain that wet-look permanently, though it is not required.
3/4" Clear Dolomite
3/4" Clear Dolomite for Premium Drainage & Clean Decorative Ground Cover
3/4" Clear Dolomite is a washed, high-durability drainage stone used when you want a cleaner look and longer-lasting performance than standard clear limestone. Dolomite is a harder, less porous stone, which helps it resist breaking down over time—especially in Southwestern Ontario conditions where repeated freeze-thaw cycles and heavy moisture can wear on softer aggregates.
Because it is “clear” stone, it contains no fines (no dust). That means it won’t compact, and it won’t trap water the way a material with fines can. Instead, it creates strong void space for fast drainage while still staying stable in place thanks to its angular shape.
Best Use Cases
- Window wells: A tidy, grey/white stone that drains quickly and helps keep window well areas clean and functional.
- French drains & heavy drainage: Ideal around perforated pipe, catch basins, and other drainage systems where long-term stone integrity matters.
- Retaining wall and foundation backfill: Supports drainage and helps reduce water buildup behind walls and along foundations.
- Exposed ground cover: A dust-free, low-maintenance alternative to mulch for modern landscapes, walkout areas, and around downspout discharge zones.
Important Note
This is a drainage and decorative stone and will not compact like “0” limestone. If you need a firm base for a driveway or patio, use a compactable material with fines and reserve 3/4" clear dolomite for drainage layers and exposed ground cover.
3/4" Clear Limestone – Standard Drainage
3/4" Clear Limestone for Drainage, Weeping Tile & French Drains
3/4" Clear Limestone (also called 3/4 clear stone or drainage gravel) is a washed stone used anywhere you need reliable water movement around structures and landscaping. Because it is “clear,” it contains no fines (no limestone dust). That means it won’t pack tight or restrict flow—water drains through the open voids between the stones instead of getting trapped.
This makes it a dependable choice in Southwestern Ontario, where heavy clay soils can hold moisture and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles can increase water pressure around foundations, slabs, and retaining walls.
Common Uses
- Weeping tile gravel: Installed around perforated pipe to support drainage and help reduce silt buildup that can clog systems over time.
- French drain stone: Used for yard drainage, low areas, and downspout runoff to move water away from problem zones.
- Retaining wall backfill: Helps relieve hydrostatic pressure by allowing water to drain instead of building up behind the wall.
- Under-slab drainage layer: Common under concrete floors to support drainage and help reduce moisture migration.
- Window wells and catch basins: A clean, free-draining stone for confined drainage areas.
Important Note
3/4" clear limestone is designed for drainage and will not compact like “0” limestone (such as 0–3/4" Granular A). If you need a firm base for a driveway or patio, choose a compactable material with fines and use 3/4" clear for drainage layers and backfill.
3/4" Round River Stone – Smooth Decorative Landscape Pebble
3/4" Round River Stone – Smooth Natural Pebble for Gardens & Ground Cover
3/4" round river stone is a naturally tumbled glacial pebble with a smooth, rounded profile and a blend of earth tones — greys, tans, beiges, and occasional muted reds. At 3/4 inch, this is the most popular size for decorative ground cover in the Windsor-Essex area.
The smooth shape and consistent sizing make it comfortable underfoot and easy to spread evenly. Unlike crushed angular stone, round stone does not compact or interlock — which makes it ideal for garden beds, foundation borders, and areas where drainage and aesthetics matter more than structural support.
Key Applications
- Garden Beds & Borders: Creates a clean, natural ground cover. Install 2-3 inches deep over landscape fabric for weed suppression.
- Foundation Splash Strips: The most common use in Essex County — a 12-18 inch strip of round stone against the foundation keeps soil from splashing onto siding and provides visual contrast.
- Decorative Ground Cover: A permanent, low-maintenance alternative to mulch. Will not fade, decompose, or attract insects.
- Around Water Features: Natural-looking stone that complements ponds, fountains, and dry creek bed edges.
Important Note
Round stone is not recommended for driveways or high-traffic walkways — the smooth stones shift underfoot and do not lock together. For walkable areas, use a crushed angular stone instead. Install edging to prevent migration into lawn areas.
3/8" Clear Dolomite (High Performance Bedding)
3/8" Clear Dolomite (HPB) for Paver Bedding, Permeable Base & Drainage
3/8" Clear Dolomite, commonly called HPB (High Performance Bedding) or 3/8 chip, is a washed, angular stone used as a modern alternative to bedding sand. The small 3/8" size creates excellent drainage, while the angular shape helps the material lock together and stay stable once placed.
Unlike round pea gravel that shifts and rolls, 3/8" clear dolomite naturally settles into place and creates a firm, free-draining layer. It is widely used for patio and walkway installs because it supports pavers while allowing water to move through the base instead of pooling under the surface.
Why Contractors Use HPB
- Self-settling stability: Spreads easily and tightens up as it’s placed, reducing the need for heavy compaction in many applications.
- Fast drainage: Washed “clear” stone contains no fines, so water moves through quickly instead of getting trapped.
- Helps prevent washouts: More resistant to erosion than sand in areas exposed to water flow.
Best Use Cases
- Paver bedding: Used under patio stones and interlock as a bedding layer that drains well and is less prone to washing out than sand.
- Permeable hardscaping: Supports permeable pavers and projects designed to let water return to the ground.
- Pipe bedding: Fits closely around weeping tile and drainage pipe, supporting the pipe while keeping drainage pathways open.
Important Note
Because this is “clear” stone, it is not the same as a compactable base material like 0–3/4" limestone. For driveways and structural bases, use a compactable product with fines, then use 3/8" clear dolomite where drainage and bedding performance are the priority.
4-6" Gabion Stone – Large Crushed Rock for Retaining Walls & Erosion Control
4-6" Gabion Stone – Large Crushed Rock for Walls, Cages & Erosion Control
4-6" gabion stone is a large-format crushed limestone aggregate, sized between 4 and 6 inches per piece. Each stone is angular and rough-surfaced, produced by crushing quarried bedrock and screening to remove undersized material. The resulting product is a clean, uniform large stone designed primarily for filling gabion baskets — the wire mesh cages used to build retaining walls, channel linings, and erosion control structures.
The angular shape is critical: when packed into gabion cages, the irregular edges interlock and resist shifting, creating a stable mass that holds its form even under soil pressure or water flow. The gaps between stones also allow water to pass through freely, which is why gabion structures are often preferred over solid concrete walls in areas with drainage concerns.
Why Gabion Structures Work in Windsor-Essex
Essex County's flat terrain and clay-heavy soils create specific challenges with water management and grade changes. Gabion walls are increasingly popular here because they handle both problems at once — they retain soil on slopes and property edges while allowing groundwater to drain through rather than building up hydrostatic pressure behind the wall. Unlike poured concrete, gabion structures flex slightly with freeze-thaw movement without cracking, making them well-suited to our climate.
Key Applications
- Gabion Retaining Walls: Fill standard gabion baskets (typically 3' x 3' x 3' or 3' x 3' x 6') to build gravity retaining walls. Walls up to 3-4 feet can typically be built without engineering, but check local building codes for your specific project.
- Erosion Control & Shoreline Protection: Line drainage channels, creek banks, or lakefront edges to prevent soil washout. The weight and interlocking shape resist displacement from flowing water.
- Decorative Gabion Features: Gabion baskets filled with clean stone are increasingly used as modern landscape features — seating walls, fire pit surrounds, planter borders, and property dividers.
- Rip Rap & Slope Stabilization: Place loose (without cages) along steep slopes, culvert outlets, and drainage outfalls to slow water velocity and prevent erosion.
Important Note
Individual stones at this size are heavy — a single 6-inch piece can weigh 5-10 lbs. Filling gabion baskets is labour-intensive and typically done by hand or with a small excavator. Order gabion baskets/cages separately from a fencing or hardware supplier before your stone delivery. For retaining walls over 4 feet in height, consult a structural engineer — these require proper design for safety. This material is not suitable for walkways, driveways, or any surface that will be walked or driven on.
